My Research

1. Who is the artist?
The artist is Eddie Cheung Wai Sum.

2. What is the form, media, material used for the artwork?
The artwork is a teamwork of 4 artists. Eddie is one of them. Eddie and the other 3 artists use videos to represent the theme of the artwork which is "Time". Those videos came from the public and editted by another person.

3. What is the artwork about?
The  artwork is called "OF THE TIME". It is a visual art open project which is all about the very abstract concept in the world which is "time". Those artists wanted to explore the possibility of representing the many ideas about Time through this investigative project. How long does the audiences spend on the videos is observed . Every audience can write dome someing about time aftering spending time on the videos.

4. What is the cultural and social background of the artwork?
This artwork is a teamwork. The four artists has different themes of the artworks. Finally, when they talked about time, various interpretations and ideas came out. Eddie found that it is very interesting and worth investigating. Moreover, Eddie thinks that cooperating with other artists can use the new way of thinking instead of the original way of thinking of the previous works.

5. Is there any connection with local or international art history?
Eddie said that, in european art history, "time" is described as a very abract concept. Among 4 artists, some of them interpret time as very abract and metaphysical.

6. What is your understanding/interpretation of the artwork?
In the exhitition, when I saw the artwork, I don't know what it means. Then I watched the videos for several times. In the videos, I think that everybody repeat and repeat the same track everyday. We are all in a rush and miss this beautiful world. We should explore more new and interesting things.

7. Do you like the work and why?
Certainly. I like it. To me, this artwork is very different from the traditional artwork such as painting. The artists use a very new way to deliver their messages. Through this artwork, I can reflect myself. Am I just wasting time on meaningless things everyday?

8. You can compare with othere artist's work if relevant.
As mentioned, this artwork is different from other artworks. This can be more likely to arouse my curiosity and interest.

9. What do you think of other people's (critic/historian/art writers) comment on the work?
I think many people do not quite understand what the videos want to tell us and found it boring. However, this concept "time" is very important as all of us should think about it deeply.

10. How significant of the work in the context of Hong Kong?
It is known that Hong Kong people care about time a lot. They want to fill up their time with everythings. Therefore, this artwork is significant in the context of Hong Kong to give reflection to Hong Kong citizens. During the several days of exhibition, more than 200 vistors have written somthing on the feedback card. It is already very successful of this artwork which exhibited in Hong Kong.

  1. Hello. Loi Ki. This is Bonica!
Your choice of investigation is very different from the most of the classmates. Your artist(s) collects sound and videos as a medium of art instead of physical objects like paintings, recycled materials or ceramic. I agreed that the works gave an impulse to our mind, reflecting if we left out the meaning of life or if we missed chances to appreciate things around us. You have a good observation on visitors’ responses on the works and revealed the issue on how most Hong Kong people treated artwork – they lose their patience easily instead of spending time to feel the works.
To be honest, it is hard to understand your post by mere text. It is better for you to make use of the artist(s)’ websites and attached some of his videos or photos to your posts.

  2. Hello~ I was greatly impressed by Eddie’s work during the visit to Fotanian Open Studios 2013. I appreciate much about their setting which requires the visitors to make their own choices in how to view the work. This interaction really induces the visitors to have deep thinking towards the concept “time”. The theme “time” especially fits Hong Kong people. However, I suggest the artists can provide some chairs to the visitors since some of their videos last for hours. It is rather tired and may stop people from watching the video. Also, I would like to know whether the artists are inspired by the fast, non-stop pace of living in Hong Kong.

  3. Hi, this is Mark. I still remember Eddie’s project “of the time” as it left a great impression to me during the visit to Fotanian Open Studio. Frankly speaking, at the beginning, I tried my best to find out the meaning of the videos and the relationship among them as I believed that it was a whole story. Of course, I failed, because they were just some meaningless tracks ordered randomly, I think. What the artists wanted to do is to let the audiences feel the time themselves. When we watch each video, we may got bored and confused. So it is a good opportunity for us to feel the time passing by and ask ourselves the question----what is time? Maybe this is so-called participate art. The artist just creates an environment to let visitors get involved in and complete the artwork. Take this project as an example, Eddie left the question about time to the visitors and they have to find the answers on their own by experiencing the artwork.
I think that our understanding and focus of the project “of the time” may be different. But that is what the artist wants to see. Right?

  4. Hello, this is William. The artist interests me a lot as he tries to descript a special topic to us. 'Time' is a creative theme, people have different mind of it.However, it is hard to understand what Eddie wnat to say on their video.I dont know whether he want to tell us the value of time or not.i am confused with it.It is better to have some guides in their artwork.
On the other hand, from my point of view, as Eddie works with other artist, the work they done may not fully represent what Eddie think.
Finally, It is better to have more description about Eddie on the blog so that we can fully understand him.

  5. Hello, I am Ken. When I watch you blog, I think that your contents are substantial. However, it is not attractive for me to watch your blog. First of all, there is no any material e.g. photo, video of eddie to show us what he is working about. Secondly, It is quite difficult to understand the theme of eddie----"time". This concept is quite abstract for many people. Fast or slow? Valuable? So you better provide more information to explain what is eddie's concept. What is "time" means.Thank you for you sharing.
